Tile Racer and The Open Arcade

Tile Racer and The Open Arcade

Hi Guys,

Before I start, great game! You guys have done an awesome job. Now, on to the meat of the issue.

I've been working on creating an arcade using FOSS games, and I'd really like to feature Tile Racer, however, as it is, it is unsuitable for use as an arcade game. The physical arcade machine will be one of those sit-down racers with pedals and a wheel. It already has a slightly modified version of Trigger compiled and ready to go, but I've got enough room that I should be able to put Tile Racer on it as well, but the source needs to be modified a little bit first.

For one thing, the games on classic arcade machines don't have the ability to quit the game. Users should be trapped in the game once it starts. There is also no keyboard in these machines, which makes entering your name when you get a high-score a bit of an issue. There are probably some other changes that will be needed as well, but those are the major issues that I see.

To anyone who is up to the challenge of making these minor changes to the source, your help will be greatly appreciated.

I would like for everyone to know that the games in The Open Arcade will be played by donation, keeping the sharing spirit that makes FOSS so great. One third of ALL the money collected by The Open Arcade will go to the Open Source Community. Most of that will go towards advertising for Linux in general, but we'll also be having programmer appreciation days, where the collected money will go directly to the developers of one of the games that we use, determined by randomness and popularity. One third of the money will also go the local community where the arcade is located, most usually, this will mean fuel and labor costs so the machines can be taken to worthwhile local community events where people can enjoy them, such as the weekly pancake breakfast at the seniors center, or Burgers on the Beach, which supplies free burgers to the cities less fortunate citizens, mostly kids and poor families, every Friday afternoon during the summer. Sometimes, that money will go to support other community initiatives, such as the Karmi Middle School here in Penticton, bc, Canada, who are currently collecting money to build a new school in Haiti. A very worthwhile cause in my opinion. The final third of the money is kept as company proceeds, where it is used to purchase new equipment, to pay the workers of the The Open Arcade, to purchase insurance to keep us out of trouble, and hopefully, there is some left over for profit.

The underling idea is to create a workable format based on a sharing economy that is profitable and that can be duplicated by other people in other places, thereby making life better for them, for their local community, and for the international community in general. This project is one of many that are under development, and all of them follow some form of the divisions of three profit sharing model described above, where one third goes to the project, on third goes to the local community, and one third goes to the international community. (Me, You, and Them)

The main website for all of these ideas, called Initiatives, is rWorld.comli.com. I need to update the site badly, because it doesn't yet list most of the projects currently under development, but it is up and running and accepting memberships, so you are all invited to join, and I hope you all come to share your own ideas for useful and profitable Initiatives, and to maybe start an existing initiative where you live.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Don't forget, this message started with a code modification request, and again, any and all assistance and advice will be duly appreciated.

Cheers Peeps.

Tony.

The devs dissappeard and the game isn't opensource. So nobody will be able to modify the source.

Well that's very disappointing news. Oh well.. No biggie.

Still a great game, but I guess I won't be using it the open arcade after all.

Bummer.
